Can they even be good and are they games at all? Well, this was my first visual novel and after seeing all 6 endings I have to say yes, they can be amazing. While it's true that game goes on tight tracks and you can't do anything extra on story sections, it doesn't matter since when story gets going, it really gets going wild and you want to know what happens next. Gameplay puzzles are just a barrier then and you just want the story and explanations.
I have played games since Monkey Island and Fallout 2, but this is something else, even better. 10/10 and amazing experince. My two advices for new players are 'less you know about the game is the better' and 'after first ending you can use guide to help how to see other ending, but leave true ending last.' The story is incredible, one which you probably won't be able to experience anywhere else in any other medium.
Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors. Junpei wakes up in the cabin of a sinking ocean liner and is forced to participate in the Nonary Game, where nine people must cooperate and solve puzzles involving the mathematical characteristics of the number nine in order to escape. 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors (Nintendo DS, 2010) for sale online eBay.

There are multiple endings, though there is one ending that should be achieved if you want to get the most out of the game. The art style is great, and allows for some unique and distinct character designs, like Seven and Akane. The soundtrack is great at building tension at crucial moments. The puzzles are simple enough to solve, though they do get gradually more difficult towards the end. However, some of the puzzles are tedious on replays, which are required to achieve multiple endings.
Still, overall, a fantastic experience. Do you like reading a good story? If so, there is a good chance you will love this game.

If so, there is a good chance you will love this game. 999 is a puzzle adventure game, but I think it can be better classified as a Japanese visual novel with some puzzles. The puzzles mostly take a backseat to the story, but are sometimes nicely weaved into the story itself. But like I said, this game is not about the puzzles. It is about the incredibly well-written story that will slowly reveal it's secrets. There are multiple endings, which means you will have to play the game several times.
Luckily you can skip the text you have already read in a previous play-through. What puts this game high on my Top Games of All Time list, is the scene surrounding the final puzzle of the game. The puzzle itself is nothing really special, but the moments leading up to that screen left my hands shaking and I just stared at the screen for a few moments before continuing. Even as I write this review, I'm taken back to that moment and relive some of that glory. That all being said, I have to say that this will probably be very different for most people. I wrote this review to show my respects to this game.
Also, the actual end scene still left a few plot holes. Let me close by saying that if you like a good book and don't shy away for a few competent puzzles, you will probably love this game as much as I do, though maybe not in the same way.
